Dear Parents,
Thank you for your patience as we get First Grade back from the blizzard break. The students were flexible and focused this week. They enjoyed celebrating Catholic Schools week with buddy games and a pep rally. We had a wonderful special persons lunch and prayer service.
This week we reviewed words with verb endings -ed and –ing. Students learned how to identify non-fiction text and search for non-fiction text features. In guided reading grounds read about crabs, extreme weather and dolphins. Please encourage your child to read nonfiction texts at home. Help them identify nonfiction sources like articles, newspapers and pamphlets.
In math we are learning about place value. Students are using manipulative to build numbers with tens and ones. They are learning to break numbers into groups of tens and ones and how to write numbers in expanded form. At home you can have your child count objects into groups of ten and leftovers.
We are preparing for our Scantron test next week. Please keep up the positive attitude. Our first graders are so excited to show off their knowledge. Please read the attached letter on testing and make sure your child is on time and ready to learn. Students are expected to be in formal uniform for testing.
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. There is a Mass and students should be in formal uniform. Next Friday is Valentine’s Day. Please read the letter about bringing in Valentine’s for the class. We will make a special bag in the classroom for your child to carry their Valentine’s home.
Next Monday there is no school. If you adventure into D.C. take a drive past the monuments and the White House. We just finished our American Symbols unit. Your child can share some fun facts.
Thank you for your support,
